Wide-back Myths Busted!

Whether you're curling up with a cozy quilt or starting a new one, we’ve got everything you need to make your next project both fun and efficient. And today, we’re clearing up some common myths about wide back fabrics—so let’s get to it!
Debunking the Myths About Wide Backs
We hear a lot of questions about wide backs, so we thought it’d be helpful to clear up a few common misconceptions. Let’s dive in:
MISCONCEPTION #1: "Wide backs feel different. Are they even cotton?"
We get it—wide backs can feel a bit different than your typical 45” quilting cotton. But fear not, our 108” wide backs are indeed 100% cotton! The silky feel comes from the higher thread count. Standard quilting cottons have about 60-70 threads per inch, while premium wide backings boast a luxurious 200 threads per inch. That’s why they feel smoother and softer!
Next time you’re in, feel the difference for yourself. The fabric on the left is a regular 45” cotton from Moda, and the fabric on the right is a 108” wide backing from the same collection. The weave is tighter and the thread finer on the wide back—it’s a true quality upgrade!
MISCONCEPTION #2: "Wide backs always bleed on my quilt tops."
It’s a common concern, but let us reassure you: quilt-shop quality fabrics are thoroughly tested for colorfastness. While some fabrics may release a bit of dye during washing (it happens!), using Color-Catcher dye magnets is a great way to minimize any risk. Here’s a pro tip: Two sheets is all you need to catch excess dye. Adding more won’t remove more dye—it’ll just spread it around!
MISCONCEPTION #3: "Wide backs are more expensive."
Here’s where things get interesting. While the cost per yard of 108” wide backs might be a bit higher than standard 45” quilting cotton, they’re actually a more economical choice in the long run.
For a queen-sized quilt (about 92” x 96”), you’ll need at least 100” x 104” of backing fabric. If you choose a standard 45” cotton, you’ll be piecing together 9 yards—yikes! But with a wide back, you’ll only need 3 yards. So while the price per yard is a bit more, you’ll save both time and money by avoiding the piecing. Talk about efficiency!
