Funky Dresden

Take your improv quilting skills to the next level! Ellyn has designed a "Funky Dresden". You will learn her technique and create a funky dresden mini quilt of your own. No two will be alike! From here you can take the technique and run with it creating many different quilt tops.

I will include a small trunk show of improv quilts I have made in the last few years.

Note: Please bring a lunch as there are no food places nearby to grab lunch.

  • Basic sewing supplies including your machine
  • Rotary cutter and a small cutting mat
  • Scissors
  • Ruler (I like a 3 1/2" x 12 1/2" ruler but bring what you have!)
  • 18 degree Dresden ruler (Buy one here or buy in the  shop)
  • fabric - 1 yard each of 2 different fabrics that contrast well with each other.
    • Solids or read solids work very well for these techniques
  • Thread & bobbins
  • sense of adventure and willingness to try new things!

Examples of what you can make with Funky Dresden blocks:

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: Must have basic knowledge on sewing and use of your machine. This is not a sewing machine class, and you will need to understand how to operate your machine prior to this class. We will do our best to make sure that your machine is running and set up correctly, and will be available to answer questions, but we will not be teaching you how to use your machine.
Requirements: Basic Sewing Supplies. Please iron fabric prior to class.
Instructor: Ellyn Zinsmeister
Instructor Bio: Ellyn is a modern quilter, charter member and past president of the McKinney Modern Quilt Guild. She has been sewing for more than 50 years, quilting for more than 20 years. Ellyn admires all forms of traditional quilts and quilters, but making traditional quilts never quite rang true for her. When the Modern Quilt movement began more than 10 years ago she knew she had found her niche. Specifically, Ellyn loves improv quilting, saturated solid colors and collaborative quilting projects. Ellyn's work has been published in Quiltcon Magazine (2021), Simply Moderne magazine (2021) and Curated Quilts (January 2022). Her quilt Urban Emergence won first place in the Group Quilts category at Quiltcon in 2021 and hung at Quiltcon 2022. She loves the quilting community, most specifically her local quilting friends in the McKinney Modern Quilt Guild but also quilters she has connected with around the world. Learn more about Ellyn on her blog,, or @ellynz on Instagram.
